There are many reasons that someone may need to rent a storage unit, but it is usually to store important items and belongings. Whether you are looking to store your entire household possessions or you need it to store a vehicle or important documents, there are several details you need to evaluate when you are on the hunt for the right storage unit. Here are some recommendations to think about when you are looking for a storage facility to keep your items safe.

Look at What You Plan to Store

One of the first things you should look at in your search for a storage facility is what you plan to store. This will help you determine the type of facility you need and also the size of the unit. There are climate-controlled facilities that provide indoor storage of your possessions, which is great to protect the quality and integrity of your possessions. If, for example, you plan to store antique furniture or your work documents, indoor storage with humidity control is helpful. 

Or you may want to store a trailer and your ATVs within the storage, for example. Then you will need a storage facility that has a wide enough doorway to allow the trailer to enter. 

Consider the Storage Location

Another important consideration in your selection should be the location of the storage facility. Having close and convenient access to your storage facility rental units makes it easy to get in and access your unit when you need to take items out or place new items into the unit. If the storage facility is close to your home or work and is located centrally, it may have a bit higher cost on the rental because it is accessible where you live. Otherwise, a storage facility that is located on the edge of town or in a more rural area, you may have to drive a bit to get there, but you can save a bit more on your rental cost.

Check Out the Property

After you have considered the location, make sure you check out the actual location with a personal visit. Take a look at the property itself and the type of security that is provided with your rental unit. You will be using a lock to secure the unit door, but look at the perimeter of the property and see if there is a security fence or any other features to keep thieves out. 

Ask the manager if the property has security cameras installed around the property to monitor any suspicious activity, and if the property is locked by an access gate. Or having the manager on site all day and night can also help keep the property safe, especially if they monitor the gate access and after-hour activities. If the property has set hours during the day where the property is open for use, this helps to keep your stored property safer, but it can limit when you can access your storage unit.
