Creating Moving Miracles

Have you ever stopped to think about what kind of life you really want to have? A few months ago, I realized that I just wasn't happy living in the same place forever, which is why I started thinking carefully about what I needed to do in order to move across the country. I realized that it was going to be a difficult thing to do, but at the same time, I knew that it was important for my well-being. This blog is all about making the right decisions so your moving process won't be a burden. Check out these posts to find out more.

Taking The Tech: Five Tips For Moving Servers And Networking Equipment

One of the most stressful elements of moving an office is moving its technology. Not only is technology fragile, but it's also heavy, bulky, and often difficult to move. Here are a few tips to make the job a little easier.

1. Tell Your Moving Service in Advance

Your moving service should be apprised that there is technology that is coming with you. In general, technology and fragile goods are kept in an entirely different vehicle or in a different area. This is to reduce the chances that the equipment could be jostled or otherwise damaged. The moving service may be able to send an additional car specifically for your equipment.

2. Have a Technician Do Tear Down and Setup

A qualified technician should always be used to disassemble and reassemble both servers and networking equipment. Though today's servers may seem fairly straightforward -- they are, after all, computers -- there are ways that a technician can set things up that will make them far easier to reassemble in the new location. Even if your moving service provides disassembly and reassembly services, your own technicians will be more knowledgeable about your unique environment.

3. Contact Your Networking Team Before the Move

Your networking team is going to have to wire your new office in advance. Not all networking equipment comes with you -- particularly the wiring. Most offices are going to have to be wired from the ground up to suit your needs. Likewise, wires may need to be recovered from your old premises.

4. Keep the Equipment Isolated

During the process of moving, servers and networking equipment should be kept far away from any other boxes -- especially if it's not known what's in those boxes. Though it's not as common of a problem now, most servers and equipment can still be affected by magnetic fields, which could corrupt their data or their systems.

5. Pay Attention to the Temperature

Servers and networking equipment don't just perform better when cold; they can actually be damaged by the heat. While moving and storing servers and equipment, you should make sure that the temperatures are always kept under around eighty degrees.

If you follow the above tips, you should be able to get your networking equipment out of your old offices and into your new offices without a hitch. Just make sure that you've involved your IT team thoroughly throughout, as there may be some things that are obvious to them that aren't obvious to others.
